PAPER-1 GENERAL STUDIES
General Science
Current Events of National and International Importance.
History of India and Indian National Movement. India and World Geography.
General Mental Ability.
Questions on General Science will cover General appreciation and understanding of science
including matters of every day observation and experience, as may be expected of a well
educated person who has not made a special study of any particular scientific discipline. In
current events, knowledge of significant national and international events will be tested. In History
of India, emphasis will be on broad general understanding of the subject in its social, economic
and political aspects. Questions on Indian National Movement will relate to the nature and
character of the nineteenth century resurgence, growth of Nationalism and attainment of
independence. In geography emphasis will be on geography of India. Questions on geography of
India will relate to physical, social and economic geography of the country, including the main
features of the Indian agricultural and natural resources. On general mental ability, the candidates
will be tested on reasoning and analytical abilities.
PAPER-2: (COMMON FOR ALL BRANCHES)
SOLID MECHANICS:
Forces: Different types of forces, gravitational, frictional, axial, tensile or compressive. Law of
Parallelogram and triangle of forces, polygon of forces, problems.
Friction: Statical friction, limiting friction, simple problems.
Centre of gravity and moment of inertia. Simple plane figures.
Simple machines, law of machine, Mechanical advantage, velocity ratio and efficiency,
wheel and axle, pulleys and simple screw jack-problems
Simple Stresses and strailns: Different types of stresses and strains, stress-strain diagram for
ductile materials. Factor of safety, ultimate strength and working strength, elastic constants,
poisson ratio. Deformations, volume changes. Relations between elastic constants. Hooke's
Law. Compound rods, temperature stresses, strain energy, proof resiliance, impact loading.
Riveted and welded joints, different modes of failures, efficiency of joints, thin cylindrical
shells, longitudinal and circumferential stresses and volume changes.
Shear force and bending moment diagrams for simply supported, over hanging and
cantilever beams. Relation between intensity of loading, shear force and bending moment.
Economical length of overhanging beams.
Theory of simple bending: Assumptions, basic flexure formula, bending stresses, modulus
of section, moment of resistance. Circular bending. Distribution of shear stress in common
structural sections.
Deflection in cantilever and simply supported beams under simple loading-propped
cantilever beams subjected to simple loading, determination of reaction. SF and BM diagrams.

Torsion: Assumptions, basic formula of torsion, power transmission by shafts of uniform
circular sections close-coiled springs, strain-energy in simple beams and shafts, sudden and
impact loading. Principal stresses and principal planes. Moher's circle of stress.
Thin cylinders under internal pressure stresses and volume changes.
Columns and struts: Direct and bending stresses, core of section. Short and long columns under
axial loading-various end-conditions. Euler and Rankine formulae, Slenderness ratio, simple builtup
columns.
Simple plane and pin-jointed trusses: Stresses by method of joints and method of
sections.
FLUID MECHANICS:
Introduction: Scope of hydraulics in Engineering. Definition and properties of fluid.
Fluid pressure and its measurement: Atmospheric pressure, Gauge pressure and absolute
pressure. Piezometer, Manometer-U-tube, Inverted U-tube, and differential manometers.
Pressure on plane surface immersed in liquid-Horizontal, vertical and inclined plane surface.
Flow of fluids: Type of flow-uniform flow, non-uniform flow, streamline flow, Turbulant flow, steady
flow and unsteady flow, Energies in fluid motion-Datum head, pressure head and velocity head.
Total energy of fluid in motion - Bernoulli’s theorem. Practical application of Bernoulli's theorem -
pitot tube venturimeter - Orificemeter - problems.
Flow through orifices and Mouth Pieces: Definition of orifice, types of orifices, Vena contracta,
coefficient of velocity, coefficient of contraction, coefficient of discharge. Submerged and partially
submerged orifices. Flow through orifices under variable heads - Time of emptying a rectangular
tank through orifices. Mouth pieces - different types of problems.
Notches and Weirs: Definition of notch, types of notches - Rectangular notch, Tringular notch and
trapezoidal notch. Discharge over a rectangular, triangular and a trapezoidal notches.
Flow through pipes: Major and minor losses - Loss of head at entrance, loss of head due to
sudden enlargement, due to sudden contraction, loss of head at exit of the pipe. Frictional loss in
pipe-Chezy formula and Daycy's formula.
Hydraulic gradient and total energy line. Discharge through parallel pipes and branched pipes
connected to a reservoir. Flow through syphon pipe.
Hydraulic transmission of power-flow through nozzle at the end of a pipe line-diameter of nozzle
for Max H.P. available. Water hammer and its effect. Laminar and turbulent flow in pipes-Critical
velocity and Reynold number.
Measurements: Measurement of velocity - Current meter surface floats and weighted rods.
Determination of discharge from velocity readings.
Impact of jets: Formulae for the force of jet on a fixed vertical flat plate, fixed inclined flat plates,
moving flat plates, series of flat plates fixed on the rim of a wheel. Force of jet striking at the
centre and at the top of a fixed curved blade and moving curved blade, velocity triangles. Work
done, power and efficiency in the above cases. Simple problems. Water turbines: Introduction
to water turbines. Use of water turbines in Hydroelectric power stations line sketch showing layout
of hydro-electric power plant with head race, dam, sluice gate, pen stock turbine, generator and
tail race. Classification of turbines - impulse and reaction turbines brief sub-classification of axial,
radial and tangential flow type. Pelton wheel, Francis turbine and Kaplan turbine, Governing of
waster turbines. Simple problems on power and efficiency.
Centrifugal pump: Installation, mountings and other accessories. Priming of centrifugal pump.
Efficiency, cavitation. Simple problems on work, power and efficiency.

PARA-5: PROCEDURE OF SELECTION:
THE SELECTION OF CANDIDATES FOR APPOINTMENT TO THE POSTS WILL BE MADE IN
TWO SUCCESSIVE STAGES VIZ.,
i) Written Examination (Objective Type)
and
ii) Oral Test in the shape of Interview only for those qualified as per rules.
THE FINAL SELECTION OF THESE POSTS WILL BE BASED ON THE WRITTEN AND
ORAL MARKS PUT TOGETHER.
1. Only those candidates who qualify in the Written Examination by being ranked high will be
called for interview in 1:2 ratio. The minimum qualifying marks for interview / selection are OCs
40%, BCs 35% SCs, STs and PHs 30% or as per rules. The minimum qualifying marks are
relaxable in the case of SC/ST/BC/PH on the discretion of the Commission.
2. The candidates will be selected and allotted to Service/ Department as per their rank in the
merit list and as per zonal preference for allotment of candidates against vacancies and for the
vacancies available.
N.B.: Mere securing minimum qualifying marks does not vest any right in a candidate for being
called for interview.
3. The appearance in all the papers at the Written Examination and also for interview in case
called upon, if qualified, as per rules is compulsory. Absence in any of the above tests will
automatically render his candidature as disqualified.
4. Candidates have to produce Original documents and other particulars for verification as
and when required and called for. If the particulars furnished in the application do not tally with the
Original documents produced by the candidate, the candidature will be rejected. As candidature
for the recruitment is processed through Computer/Electronic devices on the particulars furnished
in the application form the candidate is advised to fill in all the relevant particulars carefully.
5. While the Commission calls for preference of candidates in respect of posts, zones etc., in
the application form, it is hereby clarified that the said preferences are only indicative for being
considered to the extent possible but not binding or limiting the Commission’s powers enjoyed
under Article 315 and 320 of the Constitution of India. Therefore, the Commission has the power
to assigning a successful candidate to any of the notified posts for which he is considered by them
to be qualified and eligible, subject to fulfilling the selection criterion. Mere claim of preference for
any Zone for allotment against vacancy does not confer a right to selection for that Zone in
particular or any Zone in general.
6. The appointment of selected candidates will be subject to their being found medically fit in
the appropriate medical classification.

NOTIFICATION

CSIR will hold Joint CSIR-UGC Test for Junior Research Fellowship and Eligibility for Lectureship (NET) June 2009 on Sunday, the 21st June 2009. The application Form and Information Bulletin for this test will be available in the designated branches of Indian Bank and Oriental Bank of Commerce from 12.03.2009 to 06.04.2009.

For the test, the candidate will have the option to apply either through Application Form available in the aforesaid Bank branches OR apply ONLINE at our website www.csirhrdg.res.in between 12.03.2009 to 06.04.2009. The candidate desirous to apply online will be required to deposit the requisite Examination Fee in any of Indian Bank branches through Bank challan.

For complete information of this test, candidate may refer our notification No.10-2(5)/2009(i)-E.U.-II to be published in Employment News issue dated 7th -13th March, 2009 and will also be available soon on our website.

Old notification (December 2008)

1. CSIR will hold the above national level test on 21st June, 2009 for determining the eligibility of the Indian national candidates for the award of Junior Research Fellowships (JRF) NET and for determining eligibility for appointment of Lecturers (NET) in certain subject areas falling under the faculty of Science. The award of Junior Research Fellowship (NET) to the successful eligible candidates will depend on their finding admission/placement in a university/ national laboratory/ institution of higher learning and research, as applicable.

1.1 A candidate may apply either for ‘JRF + Lectureship’ both or for ‘Lectureship (LS) only’ He/she may indicate his/her preference in col.3 of the application, as the case may be. CSIR may consider candidates applying for ‘JRF + LS’ for ‘Lectureship only” depending on number of fellowships available. If a candidate is found to be over-age for JRF (NET) he/she will automatically be considered for Lectureship (NET) only

1.2 Two separate merit lists, one comprising the candidates qualifying for the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF - NET) and the second, of those candidates qualifying the Eligibility Test for Lectureship (NET), will be made on the basis of their performance in the above Test. Candidates qualifying for JRF (NET), will also be eligible for Lectureship (NET). The candidates qualifying for Lectureship will be eligible for recruitment as Lecturers as well as for JRF-ship in a Scheme/Project, if otherwise suitable as per the eligibility criteria of that Scheme/Project. However they will not be eligible for Regular JRF-NET Fellowship. They will be eligible to pursue Ph.D. programme with or without any fellowship other than JRF-NET. Candidates qualifying for the award of JRF (NET) will receive fellowship either from CSIR or UGC as per their assignment or from the Schemes with which they may find association.

1.3 The result of the examination to be held on 21.12.2008 may be declared sometime in the month of April 2009 and fellowship to successful candidates could be awarded from 01.07.2009.

2.1 SUBJECTS OF THE TEST

The Test will be held in the subjects as given under:

2. Earth Atmospheric Ocean and Planetary Sciences

3. Life Sciences

4. Mathematical Sciences

5. Physical Sciences

2.2 EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION

M.Sc. or Equivalent degree under the subjects mentioned in para 2.1 above, with minimum 55% marks for General & OBC candidates; 50% for SC/ST candidates, Physically and Visually Handicapped candidates and Ph.D. degree holders who had passed Master's degree prior to 19th September 1991.

A candidate can also apply for the Test under RA (Result Awaited) category, if he/she is appearing or has appeared in his/her final year (III/IV Semester where Semester system is there) of M.Sc. OR equivalent Degree Examination in subjects mentioned in para 2.1 above during the academic Session 2008-2009. Such candidates will have to submit the attestation format (given at the reverse of the application form) duly certified by the Head of the Deptt./Institute over his/her signature and rubber stamp (with address and name) from where the candidate is appearing or has appeared in the final year M.Sc. or equivalent degree examination. However, such candidates shall be admitted to the Test provisionally. They shall only be considered eligible for JRF-(NET)/LS-(NET), if they are able to produce the proof of having passed the Master’s Degree examination in the relevant or related subject with the requisite percentage of marks and within the stipulated time frame(30 April, 2010).

2.3 AGE LIMIT& RELAXATION

For JRF (NET): Minimum 19 Years and maximum 28 years as on 01-07-2008 (upper age limit may be relaxed up to 5 years as in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC, Physically handicapped/Visually handicapped and female applicants).

For LS (NET): Minimum 19 years, as on 01.07.2008. No upper age limit.

3. DATE AND SCHEME OF THE TEST

3.1 The Test will be held in two sessions on Sunday, the 21st December, 2008 with the revised syllabus of paper I & II, with the revised scheme of Examination as under: -

Negative marking will be made for wrong answers in Paper I. Paper II will be evaluated only in case of those candidates who will be able to secure a minimum of such aggregate marks in Paper I as may be fixed by the CSIR.

Candidates are required to appear in both the papers. A candidate who does not appear in Paper I will not be permitted to appear in Paper II. The questions in all these papers will appear both in Hindi and English.

3.2 REVISED SYLLABUS OF THE TEST

Syllabus of Paper I (Section A), subject-wise syllabus of Paper I (Section B) and Paper II has been revised from December, 2008 CSIR-UGC JRF (NET) Examination.

4. EXAMINATION CENTRES

The test will be held at 25 Centres spread all over India, specified below

Bangalore, Bhavnagar, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cochin, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Imphal, Jammu, Jamshedpur, Karaikudi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Nagpur, Pilani, Pune, Raipur Roorkee, Srinagar, Thiruvananthapuram, Udaipur and Varanasi.

A candidate may opt for any of the above centres. No request for change of centre would ordinarily be granted. However, a request in writing for change of Centre may be entertained on merits, if received in this unit latest by 10.10.2008

5. HOW TO OBTAIN THE APPLICATION FORM THROUGH BANKS OR ONLINE SUBMISSION AND EXAMINATION FEE PAYABLE

For this purpose, the candidate should send a request to the Bank with TWO self-addressed slips clearly mentioning the address at which he/she desires the Information Bulletin & Application Form to be sent by Value Payable Post (V.P.P.) The above mentioned Bank will entertain the request for forms through post from Tuesday the 12th August, 2008 till Monday, the 1st September, 2008 only

The candidate should write his/her name, Date Of Birth, address, date of Examination (21.12.2008) and subject code on the back of the Demand Draft so that it can be located easily, if it gets detached accidentally from the letter of request for supply of Information Bulletin. However, before attaching the draft with letter of request, the candidates should check that it bears the code number of the issuing

bank and drawee bank and also amount and signatures of issuing authority.

Examination fee paid along with the Bulletin or through Bank Challan for a particular examination will neither be adjusted for any subsequent examination nor refunded under any circumstances. 5.1 CANDIDATE SEEKING FEE CONCESSION

The candidate should attach an attested copy of the certificate to the category he belongs as a proof of his claim. An application form (either through Bank or online), claiming fee concession but without an attested copy of a valid SC/ST/OBC/PH/VH certificate, will be summarily rejected.

6. HOW TO APPLY AND THE LAST DATE OF SUBMISSION OF APPLICATION FORM

Candidates seeking admission to the Test must apply in the prescribed application form supplied along with the Information Bulletin. Please handle this form carefully while filling up. The completed application should be sent only Under Certificate of Posting (U.P.C). in the prescribed envelope supplied with Information Bulletin.

Candidate should check that the Serial number printed on the Information Bulletin, Application form, Certificate of Postage card and on the envelope are the same. The application form should be filled-in by the candidate legibly and carefully, in his/her own handwriting with Black INK pen. Candidate should super-scribe the SUBJECT CODE, APPLICATION FORM NO. and CENTRE CODE in the boxes provided on the envelope containing the application form (with enclosures).

The application form (through Bank or online), duly completed with requisite enclosures should be sent Under Certificate of Posting (U.P.C) to the Sr. Controller of Examinations, Examination Unit, Human Resource Development Group, CSIR Complex, Opposite Institute of Hotel Management, Library Avenue, Pusa, New Delhi 110012 so as to reach Examination Unit CSIR on or before 11.09.2008.

For candidates applying from Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura, Sikkim, Ladakh Division of J&K State, Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshdweep, the application form must reach the Controller of Examination CSIR on or before 18.09.2008.

The candidates are advised in their own interest to apply early enough to ensure timely receipt of their applications by the Examination Unit on or before the closing date.

7. OTHER GENERAL INFORMATION

i) Candidates may go through the terms and conditions for CSIR /UGC Research Fellowships on the respective websites.

ii) For detailed information candidates may go through the ‘Information Bulletin’ and our website www.csirhrdg.res.in for Joint CSIR-UGC Test for JRF/Eligibility for Lectureship (NET), December, 2008.

iii) Candidates must use only the form supplied with Information Bulletin purchased from any of the designated branches of the Bank listed in para 5.2 above. They should ensure that while selling the form,the bank has authenticated the form at reverse of the application form in space provided for the purpose. Application Form should be purchased from designated branches only and not from any other agency. Those candidates who are willing to apply through online application shoule see its terms & conditions in addition to above, on our website www.csirhrdg.res.in by ensuring deposit of fee of Rs.400/-, Rs.200/-, Rs.100/-, as the case may be through Bank Challan in the respective Bank (Please see 5.2) which may also be downloaded from out above website.

iv) ‘The Certificate of Postage’ may be preserved as acknowledgement.

v) Candidates should ensure that the signatures appended by them in all the places viz. In their application form, Attendance Sheet etc. and in all the correspondence with the CSIR, should be identical and there should be no variation of any kind.

vi) A candidate must ensure that communications sent to him/her at the address stated in his/her application form are redirected, if necessary. Any change in address of correspondence should be promptly brought to the notice of Examination Unit within the prescribed period i.e. by 10.10.2008.

vii) The Center and date of the Test are liable to be changed at the discretion of CSIR. No TA will be paid to the candidates by the CSIR.

viii) Candidates should note that their candidature is Provisional till their joining. No candidate will be admitted to the Test unless he/she holds the admission Certificate to the Test. The mere fact that an Admission Certificate has been issued to a candidate will not imply that the Council has finally accepted his/her candidature. Candidates may note that the verification of essential eligibility conditions of a candidate with reference to the documents as may be called for, will be taken up only by the Lecturer appointing/JRF awarding authorities after the candidate has qualified in the Test.

ix) Candidates may please note that all communications to CSIR should invariably contain the following particulars, failing which no response is possible:

(a) Name of the candidate (in full and in BLOCK LETTERS)

(b) Application form No.

(c) Subject

(d) Centre for Examination

x) In all matters the decision of the CSIR as to the eligibility or otherwise of a candidate for admission to the Test or his/her subsequent qualifying in the Test shall be final.

xi) Any attempt on the part of a candidate to obtain support for his / her candidature by any means may disqualify him/her for admission to the examination.

xii) A candidate who is found of guilty of impersonation or of submitting fabricated documents or documents which have been tempered with or of making statements which are incorrect or false or of suppressing material information or otherwise resorting to any other irregular or improper means for obtaining admission to the examination, or of using or attempting to use unfair means or of misbehavior in the examination hall, may, in addition to rendering himself liable to criminal prosecution:

(a) Be debarred by the CSIR from this test and future tests also.

(b) Will be liable to disciplinary action under the appropriate rules, if he/she is already in service under Government/Autonomous Bodies/UGC/CSIR.

xiii) All disputes pertaining to the NET Examination shall fall within the jurisdiction of Delhi only.

xiv) The eligible candidates, in their own interest, are advised to keep Certificate of Postage and photocopy of both sides of the completed Application Form and three identical copies of the passport size photographs which has been affixed on the Application Form.

I. ELIGIBILITY:

1. Educational Qualifications :

For Ph.D. and M.Phil.

(i). Candidates must have a Post Graduate Degree in concerned discipline with a minimum of 55 percent marks in

aggregate. For SC / ST candidates the aggregate shall be 50%.

For Ph.D. programme in Management Science, candidates possessing MBA are eligible. The candidates possessing

Post Graduate qualification in any other subject with 5 years of experience in managerial capacity are also eligible.

(ii). In Multi disciplinary areas:

(a). Water Resources : Post Graduate degree in Water Resources / Civil Engineering / Agricultural Engineering / Hydrology / Geology / Geophysics /Meteorology / Geography.

(b). Spatial Information Technology : Post Graduate Degree in Spatial Information Technology Mathematics / Physics / Chemistry / Geology / Geography / Engineering / Agriculture / Atmospheric Sciences / Space Sciences.

Pharmacy degree or its equivalent with a minimum of 55 percent marks in the aggregate in the concerned branch and for SC / ST candidates the aggregate shall be 50% only. M.S. is essentially a research programme for candidates in service. It is not a regular session based M.Tech. course.

III. SUPERVISOR :

1. Candidates for admission must identify and obtain the consent of Supervisor(s), possessing the necessary qualifications for supervising.

2. Professors, Asso. Professors and Asst. Professor of JNT University Hyderabad who possess, a Ph.D. degree, a minimum of five years of academic / research experience and published atleast 2 referred Journal papers and 2 reviewed Conference papers, to their credit, will be deemed as Internal Supervisors.

3. Persons working in Educational / Scientific / Industrial / Governmental Organisations, who possess a Ph.D. degree, a minimum of five years of academic / research experience and published atleast 2 referred Journal papers and 2 reviewed Conference papers, to their credit, will be deemed as external supervisors.

4. Candidates may have either Internal or External Supervisors.

5. In the case of interdisciplinary areas of research, a co-supervisor may also be permitted in addition to the supervisor, provided the supervisor and co-supervisor are from different disciplines.

6. Candidate must enclose biodata of the proposed supervisor(s) and evidence to show that he/she satisfies the qualifications laid down. They must enclose attested copies of the degree certificates of the supervisor(s).

IV. PLAN OF RESEARCH WORK :

Candidates must submit, along with their application form, a well conceived plan of research work, with evidence of having initiated a preliminary study (at least 500 words).

V. PLACE OF RESEARCH WORK AND FACILITIES AVAILABLE:

In the case of external candidates, working in their organizations, details regarding the availability of the required research facilities at the place of work must be given. The place of work must be recognised by the University before the application for admission is considered.

External candidates working in their own organizations must produce, from the Head of the Organisation, a Certificate of “No Objection” for the candidate to take up the Research work, and permission for the supervisor from the university to visit the organization periodically to monitor and assess the work of the candidate.

VI. MODE OF SELECTION : Based on objective type entrance test and / or interview.

Incase of necessity an entrance test may be conducted and eligible candidates must first appear for a one hour Entrance Test to be conducted by the University at Hyderabad at their own cost. The date and time of the Entrance Test will be intimated to the eligible candidates and details will be displayed in JNTUH website www.jntuh.ac.in.

Candidates must collect their Hall Tickets, from the Director, Admissions, JNT University Hyderabad, Kukatpally, Hyderabad one day prior to the examination and no further correspondence will be made in this matter.

VII. Candidates who are qualified in Entrance Test must appear before the admission committee for an interview at Hyderabad at their own cost. The date and time of interview will be intimated to the candidate as well as displayed in JNTUH website www.jntuh.ac.in.

The University reserves the right to cancel admission / registration of any candidate to the research programme at any stage if it is noticed that the data furnished / certificates enclosed are incorrect.

In case of any disputes concerning admissions to the courses of JNT University Hyderabad, the jurisdiction shall remain with the Courts or Consumer forum in Hyderabad only.

VIII. FEE :

On selection for admission, candidates shall be required to pay the prescribed admission fee Rs. 200/- and the Registration fee of Rs. 20,000/- per annum. Thereafter the fee has to be paid every semester till the successful completion of the programme and submission of thesis or cancellation of the admission which ever the case may be.

NON-PAYMENT OF THE PRESCRIBED FEE IN TIME MAY LEAD TO THE CANCELLATION OF

ADMISSION. (31st July for spring semester and 31st January for Autumn semester )

The candidates have to pass the Pre-Research Degree examination in two subjects specified by the University. After passing the Pre- Research Degree examination and completion of two years from the date of admission, the candidates may submit their synopsis and thesis. If the thesis is not submitted within a period of five years from the date of admission, the admission shall stand cancelled.

IX. GENERAL :

Application complete in all respects (in A4 size) accompanied with a Demand Draft for Rs. 1000/- drawn in favour of “THE REGISTRAR, JNTUH, HYDERABAD” payable at Hyderabad on any nationalized bank as Application Registration fee and three self addressed stamped envelopes of size 22 x 10 cms. (affixing Rs.5.00 stamps), is to be submitted to “The Director, Admissions, JNT University Hyderabad, Kukatpally, Hyderabad - 500 085” either in person or by Registered post / Courier on or before 04 February 2009 by 4 pm.
